Over 6 miles from an electrical outlet, this worked perfectly. I needed a way to charge my camcorder battery while backpacking in the Grand Canyon. It was also light enough not to weigh me down.
I do alot of hiking alone and with the dog. The fact that I can store 2 full charges from a wall charge or solar is great.
Highly recomended if you are going to be away from an outlet for long stretches and want your cell phone I pod etc. Did fully recharge it in the sun in one full day but you have to be vigilant about aiming it directly into the sun.
It recharges the I pod fast and at any time so gets me through just about anything without even worrying about using the solar. Simple to use, a good flashing light indicator to show how much charge, several adapters and you can use your own adapter for anything that plugs into a USB port, packs nicely.
The charger works great for me. The I pod nano has become and almost essential part of my long treks and once it's dead it's a real loss.
there is a light that shows when it is charging and it dosn't come on untill it is aimed directly at the sun so you kind of need to do it on a lay over day when you can position it well.
It could use more actual instructions. I don't yet know how well it will work inside or not in full sun, though. I purchased this charger and have had no problems with it so far. It was able to charge my iPod while on vacation. My only problem was that the directions it comes with are only IKEA-style pictograms.
Also, the classic I got comes with a usb charger only. One can be purchased from the solio website for 9.95. You can plug it into a computer, and it works fine, but not a wall, so if you are traveling without a computer, be aware, you may need this adapter as well. I didn't see this when I was researching. More later when I get the new adapter. The usb adaptor that it comes with will NOT work.
That's it for now. Haven't gotten to test this bugger out yet, but wanted to throw this info out there. The classic I bought does not come standard with a iphone compatable charger tip. Meaning you can't plug it into the wall to charge it.
The specifications on the device claim it works with iPhone, however that's not true: once you connect an iPhone (3GS, if that matters) to it, iPhone says immediately that the device is not supported for charging. Now I have to return this thing back :(
